Apple Readies OS X for Retina Display Macs

Apple has been preparing its operating systems for higher resolution Macs, adding evidence to the rumor that the next-generation line-ups of MacBooks will have Retina Display.

The OS X 10.7.4 update recently released by Apple was hiding some changes that may seem minor at first glance, but could indicate that Apple is about to launch something major.

Apple Insider reports that Apple's built-in TextEdit application's icon's highest quality version has been increased to 1024-by-1024 pixels, double that of the previous 512-by-512 pixels in the icon before the update. The increase in pixels readies the icon for a Retina display.

The full size of the icon also grew from 209 kilobytes in 10.7.3 to 1.7 megabytes in 10.7.4, reveals the report.

This could this mean that Apple's new MacBook line-up,which is expected to arrive within weeks ,will feature Retina displays like the one found on the new iPad, which has 3.1 million pixels, a million more than a HDTV.

Apple describes a Retina display as having pixels that are ''so close together, your eyes can't discern individuals ones at a normal viewing distance.''

When Apple launched the beta of OS X 10.7 Lion, the App Store icon and the Launchpad icon were increased to 1024-by-1024 pixels, and in February some cursors were improved to a higher resolution.

In April, Intel reviewed that its new Ivy Bridge processors have been built for Retina display ,which also indicates that Apple will launch Retina Display MacBook's,as the company is expected to be the first to use the new chips in its products. The new Ivy Bridge processors could power 2560-by-1600 displays, which is an impressive four-times the amount of pixels currently found in the 13-inch MacBook Pro's display.

When testing OS X Mountain Lion, which is predicted to launch in June at Apple's WWDC in San Francisco, developers have also found double-resolution icons.

Siri Says Nokia Lumia 900,Not iPhone, Is the Best Smartphone Ever

You would think Apple's virtual assistant Siri knows who pays its bills.Apparently not-when not asked ,Siri says the best smartphone ever is Nokia's Lumia 900.

What caused this apparent oversight?Siri uses Wolfram Alpha, which answers questions based on sets of data maintained by the company's researchers. When it come to smartphones, somebody must be asleep at the wheel.Lumia 900's high rating is based on five reviews of the device, all of which gives the phone five stars.

Wolfram's list of smartphone reviews boggles in mind in what it calls ''the best smartphones'',though:HP's TouchPad Tablet comes in third (it's not even a phone!) behind the absolutely stunning LG 500G on Tracfone.Nokia's Lumia 710 gets high praise ,as well as Samsung's Illusion and Focus S.

Best Buy Involved
Notably missing are any Apple iPhone models or any Samsung Galaxy S for that matter. So who's behind this odd list of the best and brightest in smartphones?I peered into Wolfram's Alpha data source information and found answer.Best Buy.

Best Buy reviews power Wolfram Alpha's answers to these type of question when it comes to electronics.Indeed,Best Buy's page for Nokia Lumia 900 show those same five glowing reviews.Maybe Wolfram Alpha needs to rethink its data sources?

Apple shares a bit of blame for this oversight too.I tried to trip Siri up repeatedly and failed each time.Take this response for example:Ask it what's the best tablet ever.Siri's response? ''The Apple iPad is the best. And that's not just my opinion.''

Now that sound like the Apple we all know and love (or hate).

Microsoft Bing joins hands with Baidu for English-language search in China.

Google dramatically pulled out of China a while back,a though it is still accessible in the mainland through Hong-Kong servers, search and e-mail services have reportedly been elusively hard to connect in recent times.Chinese search engine Baidu, continues to run the show in the meanwhile.Currently holding more than 80% of the Chinese search engine share, Baidu admits however that it hasn't been able to cater to the growing demand for English-language searches.

Baidu is researching out to Microsoft for Bing to provide English-language search, and the partnership will definitely see Bing grow in the global search against Google, with more than 10-million English-language search quires a day on Baidu presently, from the worlds largest internet population of roughly 470 million users. However the biggest reason why Google left China in the first place still remains for Microsoft- censorship of result courtesy the Chinese government.

How much this will be a problem for the biggest corporation is evident in the fact the deal has been signed, and Microsoft is espousing a philosophy of jurisdictional diplomacy.A company spokesperson commented on the deal:''Microsoft respects and follows rules and regulations in every country where we run business. We operate in China in a matter that both respects local authority and culture and makes clear that we have differences of opinion with official content management policies.''

While the deal's been linked, the Baidu-Bing partnership is expected to go online by the end of this year, appearing on Baidu search pages.Google's apparently not worried about losing China completely however ,stressing the value of the profitable world of online advertising in China, an area it is focusing on instead.

Microsoft launches msnNOW reader for trending searches and social feeds

Microsoft has developed a new social and new reading application ,called msnNOW, aiming to give its massive 522 million strong global user base a place to see what's hot,and trending on their social and news streams.msnNOW will be accessible on Facebook, on the web at now.msn.com, and as a mobile website. For now, the trends and social searches are only limited to the U.S, but should go international soon.

The msnNOW content will be culled by algorithms from standard Facebook and Twitter social search feeds, as well as Bing, and MSNBC's BreakingNews.com.A further team of 20 editors will select the top trending topics, and display them with ''short, pithy headlines'' and 100-word descriptions as ''What's Trending'' on the msnNOW homepage, which also highlights the ''Biggest Movers'' and has topic-based tabs.

MSN General Manager Bob Visse, described the service as a ''river of real-time content'' with the demo targeting 25-40 age group, using hot trending topics and an attractive image-based interface to catch the attention of the ''always socially connected consumer who lives an online lifestyle for information gathering and seeking''.The algorithmically and editorially curated topics are meant to be conversation starters, and will feature minimal filtering, lightly limiting sensitive content.

Sharing will be possible on the website, and the msnNOW social reader Facebook app, with opportunities to comment. For now, msnNOW will not feature Google+ integration ,however Microsoft is apparently open to it at a future date, when the still new social networks volumes increase.Accessible on the mobile web ,msnNOW will feature a touch-based interface, with easy swipes. It will not be available as an app for Windows Phone in the near future.Already featuring a component like design, msnNOW will be developed into a Metro-Style UI at some point. While the site's clean interface and real time updates do make for some interesting web-time, we wonder just how well this will translate internationally.

MSI GT60 Notebook-Intel Ivy Bridge-Nvidia Graphics- Review and Price

Call it the attack of the awesome Ivy.MSI's GT60 is one of the first notebooks to hit the market with Intel's third generation Ivy Bridge processor.Combine that with a vibrant 1080p display, good audio quality, and a powerful Nvidia GPU and you have got a recipe for hours of questing, grinding and saving the day at a rather affordable price.
MSI GT60 (www.laptopmag.com)

Design
The GT60 isn't as pretty as say, the Alienware M17x, but it's still a handsome piece of machinery. While we loved the lid's central panel of black brushed aluminum with a backlit MSI logo,we're not fans of the wide strips of plastic lining the slides and bottom. However the side panels' distinct slope created some interesting angles throughout the design we couldn't help but admire.

We don't foresee many people moving the 7.8-pound MSI GT60 anywhere further than another room in their house. However, the notebooks 14.9 x 10.2 x 1.8-inch frame can fit into a large backpack or messenger back.

MSI GT60 (www.laptopmag.com)
Display
The MSI GT60's 15.6-inch 1920 x 1080p full HD display delivered mesmerizing color and crisp detail, whether we were reading text, watching video or playing games. At 268 lux, the GT60 outshines the 220 lux desktop replacement category average.

Audio
Powered by Dynaudio premium speakers, a subwoofer and the THX Sound Pro control panel, we enjoyed a great sound experience. Although the GT60's audio definitely benefits from the THX control panel ,we couldn't tweak as many things as we would have liked. We could only move a slider on settings such as Surround, Crystalizer, and Smart Speaker. It would have been nice to adjust settings for Music, Movies and Gaming similar to what HP's Beats Audio control panel offers.
MSI GT60 (www.laptopmag.com)

Keyboard
Similar to Alienware notebook's the MSI GT60 features an island-styled keyboard with a full number pad with customizable colored back-lighting.We enjoyed configuring our keyboard to to our color-coded liking using MSI's Keyboard LED Manager. While we would have loved the ability to blend colors similar to Alienware's Command Centre Utility,we created a pretty bad-ass keyboard. The 10 keyboard statuses (including Standard, Idle, Gaming ,Normal ,Breathing) added a welcome level depth and customization.

The black flat keys were a little on the smaller side, especially the Backspace and Right Shift keys.Still, we enjoyed ample feedback and achieved 55 words per minute with a 1 percent error rate on the Ten Thumbs Typing Test. That's slightly larger than our desktop average.

Touchpad
The glossy polygonal border surrounding the 3 x 1.8-inch brushed aluminum touchpad make it appear smaller than it actually is.We had no problem sliding our fingers across the stimulating striated surface.

Ports
A lone USB 2.0 port resides on the laptops along with jacks for headphones, a mic, audio in, and audio out accompanied by a tray-loading DVD burner.Three USB 3.0 ports and a 7-in-1 card reader can be found on the right.Ports for HDMI ,eSATA ,VGA and Gigabit Ethernet Jack sit along the notebook's rear.

Performance
Talk about super powered. The MSI GT60 features a third-generation (Ivy Bridge) 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 3610QM processor with 12 GB of RAM, dual 500 GB ,7,200 rpm hard drive and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 670M GPU with 3GB of VRAM.We has an absolute blast cleaning up the mean streets in ''Batman:Arkham City''.As we played ,we had 10 open tabs in both Google Chrome and Internet Explorer while running a full virus scan. The Dark Knight went about his crime-fighting duty without any noticeable latency.

Booting the 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium only took the GT60 53 seconds, thanks to the dual 500 GB 7,200 rpm hard drives.

The GT60's dual drives duplicated 4.97 GB of mixed media files in 1 minute and 8 seconds, a blazing fast transfer rate of 74.8 Mbps, far above the 37.4 Mbps category average.

During the Open Office test, the GT60 matched 20,000 names to their corresponding addresses  in 4 minutes and 26 seconds. That's slightly below the 4:24 desktop replacement average.
MSI GT60 (www.laptopmag.com)

Graphics and Gaming
Playing games on the GT60 is an absolute joy.We couldn't keep the smile off our faces during ''Batman:Arkham City'' as we cleared out a room of 10 or more thugs. We made easy work of them with fluid roundhouse kicks, batarangs and bathands, with our ebony cape billowing menacingly all the while. The views of the dilapidated prison were grim, yet breathtaking complete with neon signs glowing weekly against the unshakable gloom of the night sky.

Models
The MSI has three versions of this notebook. The first one, which we tested right now, is powered by an Intel Core (Ivy Bridge) i7-3610QM processor which gives us 2.3 GHz speed. It also has 12GB of RAM,dual 500 GB 7,200 rpm hard drives and an Nvidia GeForce GTX670M GPU with 3GB of VRAM.Price-$1,559.

The base model,$1,399 (GT683-841US) offers a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7-2670QM processor with 12 GB of RAM, a 750GB 7,200 rpm hard drive, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX560M GPU with 1.5 GB of RAM.There's also the $1,499 GT683DX-840 US ,which comes equipped with a faster Nvidia GeForce GTX570M GPU with 1.5 GB of RAM.

Battery Life
During the laptop battery test (continuous web surfing over WiFi) -the GT60 lasted over 4 hours and 37 minutes. That's 1 hour and 2 minutes longer than the 3:35 desktop replacement category.

New App Centre from Facebook to launch soon

Facebook is about three things. One,staying in touch with your friends and family, two, playing games and browsing millions of apps, three, stalking your ex if she hasn't block you.

Up till now, the games and apps that you were exposed to came from the Facebook ''wall'' and were the games your friends were playing. So,to put it simply, you found out a new app once your friends have played it and posted their scores and achievements.

The new Facebook App Centre will have all the apps available for the social networking site under one roof, but it isn't competing with the big guns like the Apple's App Store and Google Play Store. It's more like a central location housing all the apps. The apps that will be visible to you however will still be based on the same mechanics as they are now,i.e.,the apps that are most relevant to you or the apps that are being played by your friends will be highlighted on top.

''Success through the App Centre is tied to the quality of the app,'' wrote Facebook employee Aaron Brady in a Blog post.''We use a variety of signals such as user ratings and engagement,to determine if the app is listed in the App Centre.'' he added.

Zdnet in its report says users can access App Centre on the web as well as in the native Android and iOS Facebook apps.It further says the URL for the App Centre will be facebook.com/appcentre ,which right now takes you to a ''The page you have requested was not found'' error page. The report also features a screenshot of the Facebook App Centre page.

This new App Centre will be a new way for developers to earn money.Till now the developers made money only through in-app purchases. But with the new App Centre, developers will have a chance to offer paid apps to the customers.

This is a win-win situation for both, the developers and the consumers.Consumers will have the access to the new app store and have the potential to interact with numerous more apps. The developers will have a wider scope to monetize their offerings.

Report:$200, 7-inch iPad Mini Coming in October

Rumors are heating up that Apple is readying a smaller version of the iPad for release later this year.

The website iMore on Thursday claimed to have a ''reliable'' source who said Apple is planning to release a smaller version of its coveted tablet in October for $200 to $250.The Cupertino tech giant is looking to price it so-called iPad Mini aggressively ''to leave absolutely no space for competitors,'' the    site reported.

The iPad Mini will be 7-inches and identical in every other way to the current 9.7 inch iPad.It is even expected to sport a 2048-by-1536 resolution display, just like the new iPad.

Cupertino is said to be keeping costs down on the mini tablet by giving it less storage capacity than it's larger counterpart. The $200 iPad Mini will provide 8GB storage, just like the base iPod Touch, which also sells for currently $200.The current entry-level iPad model comes with 16GB storage.

And to get your head spinning even more, a separate report this week indicates that the iPad Mini is coming even sooner than October.Taiwan-based news organization Digitimes reported that a 7-inch iPad will be released in August, while a new version of the iPhone will launch in this September.According to Digitimes the 7-inch iPad is being manufactured by Foxconn.

Evidence that Apple is planning to launch a smaller version of the iPad has been mounting for months. The rumors first surfaced back in December, with reports that Apple has purchased 7.85-inch panels.

If Apple goes forward with the rumored plans, the scaled-down tablet would likely be a hit with consumers ,a recent survey from PriceGrabber indicates. In the survey of 2,603 U.S online shopping consumers, conducted in late April, 52 percent of respondents said they would consider buying a so-called iPad-Mini.

Microsoft's Bing Gets Major Facelift with Deeper FaceBook Integration

Microsoft has announced a major face-lift for its Bing search engine being more ''personalized search results'' using data from social networking sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn.Microsoft is going to integrate a new sidebar that will allow friends on social networks to guide on a search.Bing is also getting an instant snapshot column, which features additional information and links to useful contents such as maps, reviews and reservation tools.

According to Derrick Connell, corporate vice president of Bing, the update will roll out in the next few weeks.Users will be receiving a notification after signing at the Bing site.''Increasingly the web is about much more than simply finding information by navigating a topically organized graph of links'',says Qui Lu ,president of Microsoft's Online Service Division.''We are evolving search in a way that recognizes new user paradigms like the growth of the social graph, and will empower people with the broad knowledge of the Web alongside the help of their friends.''

The new Bing is at test now at www.bing.com/new and is available by registration. The new Bing has three sections, the leftmost pane carries the main search results, the middle page known as ''Snap Shot'' has links to useful content turning a search result into directions, the rightmost pane has been integrated with the social media.

The right side bar has ''Ask Friends'' to seek advise from friends on social networks ,''friends who might know'' to link search with interest of known friends, and ''people who know'' to display results from social networking sites. The sidebar also has an activity feed, letting users interact with their social networks without leaving the Bing page.

The forthcoming Bing update is considered to be Microsoft's another attempt at leveraging it's partnership with Facebook in a bid to challenge Google's dominance in search segment.Google recently integrated social media into its search with Search Plus Your World, which mainly has Google+ content such as photos ,profiles, and posts that are relevant to your keyword.Google however drew flak for not integrating Facebook and Twitter results.

Apple new iPad may get Multi-user Support

The iPad is the most monogamist relationship you can ever have with any device. It syncs with just one Apple account and using a friend's Apple ID to install apps is a messy affair. But all that just may change in the future.Apple insider has reported that Apple is aware of the lack of multi-user support on the iPad as a 'known issue' and it is 'being investigated'.

The Cupertino giant is aware of the request for multi user support that is coming in from developers and their engineers are looking into the matter. The official response form the Apple Developer Connection's Worldwide Developers team to the developer's concern about multi user support says, ''After further investigation it has been determined that this is a known issue ,which is currently being investigated by engineering''.

Multi user support isn't a new concept for Apple. The company has been looking into the matter since the launch of the first generation iPad way back in 2010.

Whether or not the iPad will support multiple users remains to be seen.Apple's annual Developer Conference (WWDC) will take place from June 11th to June 15th and we expect the big A to make quite a few announcements here. For starters we will see more details of their new OS Mountain Lion and hopefully some early preview of iOS 6 and maybe the new iPhone.Maybe we will see multi user support make an appearance in the new OS?

Apple patent reveals possible 7th generation iPod Nano Touch with Environmental Sensors and Camera

A patent filed over the U.S Patent Office has revealed Apple's latest design innovation, which will hopefully see the light of production. The patent features images looks like the next or,the 7th generation of the iPod Nano, with some new functionalities that will turn that minute wonder into something more versatile.

From what the patent says, the iPod Nano 7 will have a camera onboard,as well as other new sensors, such as a motion sensor,a microphone, and a temperature gauge. All this for added ''functionality''.How these would be useful on a tiny media player is a little questionable, but the combination might just yield some sort of new interface that combines them all in interesting ways. For now,a screen saver that adapts to the environment -such as orientation, temperature ,sound-to deliver a sound/active ''Chameleon-like screen saver'' experience,is an example application to the patent.

Nothing has been conformed so far,and no one can be sure if any of Apple's many recent patents will make it into the market place in the near future.A new interface seems to be the common theme of most of these patents, though and you can expect it to go beyond just rudimentary gesture controls for sure. The patent in question was filed in 2009,nearly a year before the 6th generation iPod Nano hit the shelves,so it is a little strange we haven't seen it in the market yet, considering Apple's not too slow development cycle.

Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook:Rs.79900-Detailed Review and Specs

The XPS 13 mark the first Dell Ultrabook in the market, and it's one that deserves our attention. It has standard innards like most other ultrabook's out there, but where it differ is with it's feature offering and a build and design that's quite noteworthy. If you prefer Dell as a brand and if you had been waiting for them to launch a worthwhile ultrabook, your wait is over.Read on to see the best features and specs of this machine.

Design and build
Just like the Asus ZenBook UX31E,the Dell XPS 13 is yet another ultrabook that steps very close to mimicking the Apple MacBook Air's look and design. The Dell XPS 13 has a plush silver-grey metal screen lid that complements it's dark coloured base. The Dell ultrabook features rounded edge and minimalistic  design to heighten its overall elegance and appeal. It's a premium laptop through and through. It may not be as thin and light as the 11-inch MacBook Air or the Toshiba Portage Z830 which weighs 1.11 Kg,still the Dell XPS 13 is quite thin and its 1.35 Kg frame is very easy to carry around.

Another interesting highlight about the Dell XPS 13 is its petite frame. The ultrabook's dimension,in terms of width and depth, are smaller than a conventional 13.3 inch frame laptop -eg.the MacBook Air or any other 13-inch ultrabook we have reviewed. This gives the Dell XPS 13 the impression of being a 13-inch laptop in a smaller 12 inch frame. It's a noteworthy achievement and Dell's right to make a big deal out of it.The Dell XPS 13 has a Corning Gorilla glass display, not only this, but the XPS 13's bottom panel is made of carbon fibre-even the finishing and textures on the bottom panel feels rich and premium. The combination of metal and carbon fibre lends the Dell XPS 13's frame a degree of robustness that defies its super-slim profile. From its hinge design to the overall finish of the ultrabook, the Dell XPS 13 blends attractive looks and extremely well with dependable built quality which is simply a cut about the rest.

Screen,Keyboard and Touchpad.
The Dell XPS 13 ultrabook's 13-inch screen is glossy and bright in nature, with a 1366 x 768 pixel resolution. It has edge-to-edge Gorilla glass layer, but average viewing angles.Having said that, the Dell ultrabooks performance is good whether its watching movies and video clips for personal entertainment and reading text. There is a 1.3 MP webcam groomed into the screen's top bezel which is great for video chats, and Dell also throws in a webcam utility that promises to add a bit of fun to your video chat sessions.

The Dell XPS 13's keyboard is almost similar to the Dell Adamo XPS 13.which had a very good keyboard.Likewise the Dell XPS 13 features wide chiclet-styled backlit keys that are very well laid on and just a treat to type on.All the alphanumeric keys and frequently used keys like Space,Enter,Shift,Alt etc. are accurately placed.Overall we are very impressed with the Dell XPS 13's keyboard,it's as great as any Lenovo ThinkPad laptop launched last year.

Specs and Hardware.
The Dell XPS 13 comes with a powerful hardware feature set that can rival any ultrabook currently available in the market.Like the HP Folio 13,the Dell XPS 13ultrabook has an Intel Core i5 2267M processor which have a speed of 1.6 GHz,4 GB of DDR3 RAM,128 GB SSD,and onboard Intel HD 3000 graphics. This is slightly less extravagent than the Asus ZenBook UX31E ultrabook, which has a faster Intel Core i7 2677M,4 GB of DDR3 RAM,256 GB SSD,and onboard Intel HD 3000 graphics.Be that as it may,the Dell XPS 13 is still more powerful than any other mainstream 14 or 15-inch laptop out there.
